Glucose is normally created in the body from carbohydrates. However, there is another process, gluconeogenesis, which creates glucose from non-carbohydrates, a function taking place mostly in the liver. Gluconeogenesis is one of two main methods used by the body to keep blood sugar from dropping too low. Glutamine is strongly gluconeogenic and so supports gluconeogenesis from enterocytes found in the gastro-intestinal tract, conserves glycogen stores in muscles and supports growth hormone production.
