About AREDS 2:*
The AREDS 2 study was completed in 2013, It was a 5-year nationwide following the AREDS I study completed in 2001, both studies sponsored by the National Eye Institute (NEI). In both studies, a specific combination of nutrients was found to help slow down the progression of AMD, with the AREDS 2 study resulting in a recommended revision of the original AREDS I formula.

The result of the AREDS 2 study was to add lutein and zeaxanthin to the formula, while removing the betacarotene.
